North America's Top 50 Fairs drew over
40,000,000 in 2008. Texas State Fair #1 again
North Americas Top 50 fairs, ranked by attendance was released today. The fairs
collectively drew almost 41,000,000 people, a small 2% drop from 2007. Weather and the
economy were concerns going into 2008 season. Top 50 fairs are ranked individually with
attendance and change from 2007.
The Top 50 North American Fairs drew 40,670,657 guests in 2008, only a small decrease of
2% from 2007. The list was led once again by the State Fair of Texas with an estimated
2,024,000 visitors.
Carnivalwarehouse.com, the industry website that compiles the annual list, said the top
three fairs for 2008, the Texas State Fair, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
(1,802,158), the Minnesota State Fair (1,693,553) held their respective places but the
Canadian National Exhibition (1,310,000) moved into the fourth place spot with a 6%
increase over 2007, replacing the Los Angeles County Fair (1,303,655), which fell to fifth
place. Other big movers on the list included the San Antonio Livestock Show and Exhibition
(1,300,513), which moved up to the sixth place spot from tenth place with a 8% increase.
The Iowa State Fair was up 11%, the Wisconsin State Fair 9%, the Indiana State Fair 14%
and the biggest increase this year, the Illinois State Fair, up an incredible 21%
New to the carnivalwarehouse.com Top 50 Fairs list this year were two fairs: The Wilson
County Fair, Lebanon, TN (466,119) and the Topsfield Fair, Topsfield, MA (466,000).
With gas prices at record levels, North Americas Fair performed surprisingly
well, said Matt Cook, President of Carnivalwarehouse.com. Weather hurt many of
the fall fairs in September and October or we might have seen a significant increase in
attendance this year, he added. Some of the biggest drops came from the New Mexico
State Fair, (down 19%), the Pacific National Exhibition, Vancouver, B.C. (down 17%), the
York Fair, York, PA (down 17%) and the Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition (down 14%).
