Kings Island Amusement Park: Antique Cars and Big Coaster Buzz
Rides 4U - New & Used Rides Giant Wheel Foreman Wanted
There are few things certain in life. One certainty is this: a classic antique cars ride is returning to Kings Island Amusement Park in Mason, Ohio. One thing is uncertain: the strong rumors and hints from both Cedar Fair, the owner of Kings Island, and various coaster enthusiast groups, that there’s soon to be a new coaster at Kings Island.

Starting with those hints: Chad Showalter, park spokesman says no comment, except that he enjoys the speculation of coaster fans. That said, an August 2018 permit for construction of a new coaster by Bolliger & Mabillard was issued. And the new coaster buzz is everywhere. The park itself has added flame to the fire of speculation by dropping hints that “Number 5 is alive,” which refers to the park’s former Son of Beast roller coaster. That popular ride was torn down after injuries to riders and other issues made it untenable back in 2012. Will there be a new giant coaster in 2020?

Certainly the signs point that way, with Kings Island the only major park in the Cedar Fair family that doesn’t have a mega coaster. And, the smaller sized – medium coaster Firehawk – has been dismantled by the park. The position of that coaster and the former Dinosaurs Alive land located in the area, make it ideal for a super coaster of at least 300 feet high – that’s the size of other Cedar Fair park mega coasters.

That said, nothing definitive has been announced about that coaster. On opening day at the park, April 20th, the roller coasters ready to induce screams and fun are the park’s existing favorites: Banshee, Diamondback, the relatively new Mystic Timbers, and the Beast, celebrating its 40th anniversary season. For kids: it’s Planet Snoopy, voted Best Kids Area in the World for 18 years, a renovated International Street, and the new car ride, Kings Mills Antique Autos.
The latter was subject of Kings Island’s enjoyably cryptic tease to amusement park fans and reporters, “something old will be new again.”

But that doesn’t mean there’s a solid no from the park. Discarded pine wood material has been seen under the former Son of Beast’s memorial plaque in the line area for the Banshee ride. While Mystic Timbers was a recent addition to the park, fans are still hankering for more, and with no hard and fast no from King’s Island, the coaster rumors will undoubtedly continue.
And if not Son of Beast II – especially given the poor safety record for the original, the name may not fly – perhaps riders will find an expanded Adventure Express, another coaster with a mining theme and due for an update.

Regardless, Cedar Fair likes to tease fans about coming attractions to their parks, and since purchasing King’s Island in 2006, they tease there, too.
In the meantime, nostalgia is in full swing with a return of the storied attraction for little ones: the original Les Taxis ride which closed in 2004. Now renamed as Kings Mills Antique Autos, it will be taking tiny drivers on a spin come opening day.

According to Kings Island vp and general manager Mike Koontz, "… it's an attraction guests remember riding with their whole family… their very first driving experience as a kid.”

Located in the Coney Mall near the Juke Box Café and Racer, the new ride will feature two-thirds size replicas of 1911 Ford Model-Ts. The quarter mile track will take drivers three minutes on a leisurely track.

With more than 100 rides, shows and attractions, Kings Island offers plenty of thrills and family fun. There are sixteen roller coasters in all so far – and maybe a new mystery ride coming soon. Mystic Timbers, which opened in 2017 was voted “Best New Ride” by Amusement Today.

And guests were indeed enthusiastic about the ride; park officials were a bit surprised then when season pass tickets slumped last year. The reason had little to do with the excitement level surrounding park rides and much to do with a cold snap last year that kept guests away from the park in early spring, resulting in fewer season pass sales. All in all, park visitation is up; and antique autos is certainly an attractive new element for the 2019 season.

Pricing for 2019? Online “any day” tickets are just $39.99; two day tickets are $59.99 online. For $133, the Gold Season Pass offers park fans unlimited visits and free parking at Kings Island on every operating day throughout the year. The pass also includes admission to Soak City Water Park, the Halloween Haunt in the fall and WinterFest for holiday fun. Early park access and a variety of food and merchandise discounts are also a part of this type of pass holder’s perks.

For $218, the Platinum Pass gives fans all of the above at every Cedar Fair Park, not just Kings Island.

The regular pass offers unlimited attendance, but does not include admission to Halloween Haunt, WinterFest, or include free parking for $115.

Additional season pass perk options are the All Season Dining Pass, All Season Drink Refills, and All Season Parking. The innovative All Season FunPix allows unlimited digital, professional park photos from every visit to Kings Island during the 2019 season. Season Locker Pass rentals are also available.

Or, for $499, guests can get on favorite rides faster with an All Season Fast Lane Plus pass that allows them to bypass lines. That pass is linked to any other season pass purchased, and is non-transferrable.
